We Have Created New Idols. The Worship Of The Ancient Golden Calf (cf. Ex 32:1-35) Has Returned In A New And Ruthless Guise In The Idolatry Of Money And The Dictatorship Of An Impersonal Economy Lacking A Truly Human Purpose. The Worldwide Crisis Affecting Finance And The Economy Lays Bare Their Imbalances And, Above All, Their Lack Of Real Concern For Human Beings; Man Is Reduced To One Of His Needs Alone: Consumption.

Jesus Is More Than A Friend. He Is A Teacher Of Truth And Life Who Shows Us The Way That Leads To Happiness.

Lent Comes Providentially To Reawaken Us, To Shake Us From Our Lethargy.

Our Efforts Must Aim At Restoring Hope, Righting Wrongs, Maintaining Commitments, And Thus Promoting The Well-being Of Individuals And Of Peoples.

Jesus Teaches Us To Put The Needs Of The Poor Ahead Of Our Own, Our Needs, Even If Legitimate, Will Never Be So Urgent As Those Of The Poor, Who Lack The Necessities Of Life.
