Those, Certainly, Which Most Powerfully Appeal To The Great Primary Human Affections: To Those Elementary Feelings Which Subsist Permanently In The Race, And Which Are Independent Of Time. These Feelings Are Permanent And The Same; That Which Interests Them Is Permanent And The Same Also.

Indeed There Can Be No More Useful Help For Discovering What Poetry Belongs To The Class Of The Truly Excellent, And Can Therefore Do Us Most Good, Than To Have Always In One's Mind Lines And Expressions Of The Great Masters, And To Apply Them As A Touchstone To Other Poetry.

For Poetry The Idea Is Everything; The Rest Is A World Of Illusion.

Joy Comes And Goes, Hope Ebbs And Flows Like The Wave; Change Doth Unknit The Tranquil Strength Of Men. Love Tends Life A Little Grace, A Few Sad Smiles; And Then, Both Are Laid In One Cold Place, In The Grave.
